June 2023 MVP: Edwin O'Neil Perey

Our June MVP is Edwin O'Neil Perey! Edwin is embracing the ‘when in Rome’ mentality and not letting any cultural experiences escape him. From volunteering at the NYC Marathon to visiting the Hollywood Sign to exploring his local Louisville area, Edwin is creating memories that will last a lifetime and truly getting to know the people and places of America.

Edwin’s employer, The Galt House Hotel, in Louisville, KY had the following to share:

Edwin is very valuable to the company. He has been very dependable and a fast learner. He has done an amazing job training new staff.

To celebrate his win, we gifted him a Louisville-inspire cooking class where he learned to prepare Bacon Meatballs Simmered In A Bourbon BBQ Sauce, Bourbon Barrel Ale & Brown Sugar Marinated Pork Tenderloin w/ Bourbon Glazed Carrots, and Coffee Liquor Soaked Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pies w/ Caramel Topping.

What are the most valuable things you have learned while on the internship program? This program helped me improve my skills and knowledge in Front Office Operations. It improves my perspective in formulating ideas, solving problems, and making decisions.

What are your career goals and how do you think an American internship will benefit you in your future career? I am looking to become a team leader (Supervisor or Manager) within the next one to two years in the hospitality industry. I strongly believe that this international experience helped me a lot, and will lead me to land a better job and achieve my goals.

What are your top three recommendations for places to visit/things to do in Louisville? I recommend visiting the museums - namely Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, Muhammad Ali Center, Frazier History Museum, and 21C Museum. These are all must-see if you’re in town! Also, visit a bourbon distillery. I’ve tried Angel’s Envy and it is a great distillery experience! If you’re looking for a great dining experience, go to Brendon’s Catch 23! It is expensive but worth it.

How have you grown personally from this program experience? It prepared me for higher responsibilities in the future. Most importantly, it helped me build and develop my character.

Why do you think cultural exchange programs are important? Cultural Exchange Program is important because it will help you grow more as an individual by gaining international level of skills and a competitive edge in the hospitality industry.
