Cultural Happenings: Cultural Exchange in the Classroom - Dominican Republic
The third iteration of Culture in the Classroom, a volunteer event where LifeTRAVELED exchange visitors introduce their culture to dual-language American school children, featured a lesson in the Caribbean culture of the Dominican Republic.
Currently living and working in Orlando as part of their cultural exchange program, Summer Work and Travel exchange visitors Perla, Liany, Crifel, Jose, and Radhaysis, acted as ambassadors for their country to create enthusiasm and appreciation for the Dominican Republic.
Through a colorful presentation, the exchange visitors shared personal stories from their lives in the Dominican Republic, wowed with stunning photographs of the natural beauty, and stirred their appetite with descriptions of local cuisine.
Incorporating interactive elements, the children colored images of the Dominican Republic flag, a drum representing music and dance, and Mangu, a popular Dominican dish. In addition, the children were treated to traditional Dominican Republic sweets.
The success of the exchange visitor program is based on people-to-people exchanges. Dominican exchange visitors participating in Culture in the Classroom expands the children’s worldview, inspires global curiosity, and creates a positive representation of the Dominica Republic.
