Cultural Happenings: St. Augustine Night of Lights

Sparkling with millions of lights, St. Augustine, Florida’s dazzling Night of Lights has been listed as a top 10 holiday light display by National Geographic and is a top holiday destination for Floridians and beyond. Established in 1565 by the Spanish, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously habited colonized settlement in the United States. In 1821, the Spanish relinquished control of their Florida colonies, and the territory officially became a US state in 1845. Calling on their Spanish heritage, St. Augustine honors the ancient Spanish practice of placing candles in the window as a sign of welcome by lighting up their city to embrace visitors with warmth and cheer.

To share this piece of American history and the magic of the holiday season, LifeTRAVELED arranged an evening trip to St. Augustine to tour the city’s breathtaking display on a trolley tour. During the tour, exchange visitors wore special glasses that transformed the lights into snowflakes and sang holiday songs. Following the tour, exchange visitors warmed up with beverages from a Cuban bakery and experienced America’s affinity for mac-n-cheese at a specialty shop. During a walk through the town, they encountered a rare “Love Tree” - an oak tree with a palm tree growing out of the side of it. Legend says that hugging the tree with bring true love.

On the way, we included an American road trip essential - Buc-ee’s, an emporium of road trip snacks and souvenirs. Fun fact: Buc-ee’s has the world record largest convenience store in Luling, Texas (75,593 square ft).

I enjoyed the entire experience of the Night of Lights. The blend of lights, music, and the community spirit made the evening truly special and memorable. The event helped me better understand American culture by seeing how local traditions and a sense of community are celebrated. It was an opportunity to connect with people who value history and heritage. I also experienced how the festivities bring everyone together in a joyful atmosphere. - Vivian, Peru, Summer Work and Travel
